Dexter 7-4: The Corruption of Debra Morgan

Dexter (Anthony Michael Hall) and his Dark Passenger

Dexter: The most loveable serial killer on television. It seems wrong to have “loveable” and “serial killer” in the same sentence but Showtime’s Dexter has been able to pull off a likeable murderer for seven seasons now. Season seven started off blazing like an uncontrollable forest fire; and, while things have calmed down in these last few episodes, the fire hasn’t been completely extinguished and feels like it could quickly get out of control at any second, which is why we love to watch!

Last night’s episode “Run” sees Debra take a few more steps towards seeing things Dexter’s way. Are we eventually going to see a sister/brother killing duo?

Here’s your episode recap:

The Miami police investigate Speltzer’s mausoleum, but can’t find a single piece of evidence to convict him. Luckily, the cops find him at a random junkyard and bring him in for questioning, where Deb and Batista work their magic and get a confession out of him. Later, though, Speltzer’s lawyer finds some technicality that sets him free even though he freakin’ confessed. Booooo.

Deb has a dream she’s in a bath tub filled with blood with a wedding ring on her finger with Dexter asking her to be his forever. That triggered her to finally remember that Rita was dead. Oh yeah! Remember Rita, Dexter’s wife who got fridged because having her around was a hassle? When confronted about her, Dexter confirms that Trinity killed her, and he killed Trinity. Deb questions his ability to love people, he tells her he loved Rita, and that he loves her. She tells him that his lifestyle puts his son in danger, just as it did Rita, and Dexter refuses.

Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) poses for a family photo with her weird, weird brother.

Quinn comes in to shut down the mobsters’ strip club again, so the mobsters decide to pin Mike’s murder on their own bartender and force him to commit suicide in exchange for money to support his family. The cops investigate and everyone believes the story except Batista and, of course, Dexter since he already killed the guy who really killed Mike. C’mon Batista, solve a crime before Dexter does, for once!

Hannah, the long ago ex-girlfriend and accomplice to Roadkill (the prison inmate who got flattened by a truck a couple of episodes back) comes back to the police station to see if she could help locate the bodies of Roadkill’s other victims. Again, we get a bit of romantic sparkage between her and Dexter, which goes to show that she’s only attracted to dudes with serious mental problems.

Dexter breaks into Speltzer’s RV, but Speltzer makes a surprise visit, and Dexter gets knocked out. He wakes up in a maze with Speltzer trying to kill him. Dexter escapes but Speltzer has seen his face, so Dexter decides it’s a good idea to send Harrison to Rita’s parents so that he can take care of business, and by business I mean stabbing Speltzer in the heart with a stake and then cremating him, along with his blood slides. He then invites Deb to watch the smoke billow up into the night time sky, and she says she’s glad he’s dead. Is Deb finally starting to see things Dexter’s way? Are there hints of romantic tension between them even though they’re step-siblings, so they’re not blood related, but it’s still really messed up? Tune in next week to find out! Until then, Doakes ‘em if you’ve got ‘em!

Surprise, motherbumper!
