Here is something that is very near and dear to my heart. I’m a huge Star Wars fan and I have been since I was a little girl. Two years ago, I heard a story about a little girl named Katie Goldman who was being harassed for bringing a Star Wars water bottle to school. She was told it was a toy for boys. Her mom Carrie wrote a blog post about it and that story tugged at the heart strings of Star Wars and geek fans everywhere. Thousands and thousands of people declared their love for Katie and showed her not only the value of being yourself, but how wonderful it is to find a community of people who love what you do, even if you’ve never met them. See? There are good stories on the Internet!

I did an interview with Katie and Carrie right after the incident and fell in love with this family. One of the things that came out of the whole incident was an outpouring of gifts from Star Wars fans all over the world. Carrie felt that this should benefit the whole community and started Wear Star Wars/Share Star Wars day. This is the time of year that we find it in our hearts to donate to those less fortunate. In honor of Katie, this December 14th, wear a Star Wars or geek shirt to show your pride and donate a science fiction/fantasy toy to charity. The kicker? Make sure you label it “for boys or girls” so it doesn’t end up being put in the boy pile.
Guys, if you’re going to do this, tweet us pictures of you dressed in your geek finery to @Fanhattan! We’d love to see them. May the force be with you.
